Description
FUDGE-5G will showcase an Industry 4.0 Campus Network with ultra-low time synchronization requirements (TSN). In the factory a controller will interact with many sensor and actuator devices, located within a small area (up to 100 m2). These applications have high performance requirements such as low latency, high reliability, and deterministic delivery of messages. In some environments, replacing the wired links with wireless links will provide flexibility for remote reconfiguration and facilities deployments, e,g., cables need to go through hazardous areas, a rotating part in a machine needs connectivity. A 5GLAN-type of service can be provided enhancing existing wireless and/or fixed LAN solutions deployed in the Industry 4.0 factory. The combination of the private network with a public network (Campus Network) brings ubiquitous coverage where the private network does not reach.
Challenges
Extending TSN networks towards mobile infrastructure requires a set of fundamental enablers to match the features in fixed networks. The first and primary challenge consists in delivering time synchronization to the industrial mobile devices. This requires either some enhancements to the wireless modem to access specific radio signals or ultra-low delay high reliable radio link to exchange the PTP messages. The second and most challenging issue is the E2E transport between the cellular and the fixed device connected to the factory. TSN networks might require asynchronous communications where a set of scheduling transmission is agreed between the devices. Moreover, the data transmission might be non-IP as the industrial devices will have to exchange 802.1 address discover mechanisms and broadcast messages over L2 communications. Mobile networks have been designed for consumer communications, thus IP is the de facto transport in the radio link all the way until the packet gateway where a GTP session is decapsulated for communication with other devices. FUDGE-5G proposes usage of Ethernet all the way from the UE to the fixed industry LAN without GTP encapsulation/decapsulation in the E2E communications.
Innovation
5G-TSN is one of the key enabling 5G technologies of the project. The main innovation of this use case is the TSN integration in a 5GLAN public-private system. To achieve this, first, time synchronization delivery to wireless devices must be guaranteed and be cost efficiently. Secondly, a design of network functions in a service-oriented fashion required to implement a mobile device that includes all the required functionality to become TSN 5G device.
Activity Plan
Activity 1:
This activity focuses on the definition of the use case itself. It involves not only the description of test cases, topology, and innovations (5G-TSN, 5GLAN), but also the frequency band selection and, most importantly, the component identification. This activity is performed only once, at the beginning of the project
Activity 2:
Design of the different components from an analytical point of view. Some of the components that need to be considered in this stage are the 5G modem, the SCP-based 5GC, and the orchestrator and LCM of the 5GC. This stage will be revisited for each phase.
Activity 3:
This is the last stage prior to integration and validation of the full E2E infrastructure in the context of the use case. It includes the fabrication of the 5G modem, the TSN translator development in both modem and 5GC, the TSN controller implementation, and the SCP and orchestration development.
Activity 4:
Once all components have been individually implemented, they will be into the infrastructure located in Oslo. This will be done periodically on-site (this may vary depending on the pandemic).
Activity 5:
The E2E solution will be demonstrated in several stages in the planned locations.
Activity 6:
Analysis and elaboration of results, compilation of reports.
