Description
A 5G Virtual Office provides (secure) access to a specific set of corporate services without any restriction to the coverage range or proximity. A 5G device can communicate with any other device member of the 5G Virtual Office from anywhere there is 5G coverage, including both indoors and outdoors. For the particular case of a hospital as considered in the project, the main application is that hospital professionals or patients do not have to be in the same location to access files, databases, or other office equipment, allowing the flexibility to work remotely (e.g., paramedics accessing the hospital database and retrieving patient medical file on the go. video conferencing diagnosis), including from a patient premise or other off-site location.
Challenges
Nowadays hospitals feature a various degree of devices, equipment and machinery, ranging from patient’s bio-sensors, such as pacemakers; office equipment such as printers, personal computers, scanners, internal voice system communication, medical records databases, etc.; and outdoors vehicles, such as ambulances carrying patients or deployed doctors on the patient premises. It is a complex problem to provide a common connectivity domain that would allow these devices to interact and communicate to each other seamlessly, yet securely.
Innovation
FUDGE-5G will leverage the unified eSBA to provide a 5G Virtual Office for a hospital. The Virtual Office will feature a unified all-Ethernet access domain where devices are agnostic to the connected access network (5G, WiFi, fixed Ethernet), exploiting all the security and isolation provided by current LAN solutions. The FUDGE-5G Platform can have multiple components prepared and tailored for each kind of device it must serve, customizing the resources, which part of the network they are deployed or other lifecycle parameters. As an example, an improved location NF deployed dynamically on the edge to get ambulances fleet location in real time.
Activity Plan
Activity 1:
In activity 1, the 5G-VINNI SA 5GC and RAN will be used to deploy and test the vertical application. The goal is to understand how the vertical equipment interacts with the 5G network and, in an early stage, to identify possible constraints and difficulties. Such early identification greatly benefits the use case, because any issues can be immediately addressed and overcame before they pose risks for the use case execution. This activity takes place at Fornebu.
Activity 2:
In Activity 2, and after the successful integration of the vertical hardware with the RAN, FUDGE-5G core components will be deployed and integrated, namely the SCP, the SSO and the VAO. The goal is to bring together all partners' components and identify and correct any issues before Activity 3. Activity 2 will take place in Fornebu.
Activity 3:
With Activity 3, and after the successful integration of the different components of FUDGE-5G core, the RAN will be deployed in the hospital premises. Here the RAN will include a macro cell, on the hospital campus, and a micro cell in a hospital room. The core deployment stays at the TNOR headquarters at Fornebu.
Activity 4:
Finally, with Activity 4, an edge site will be deployed in the hospital campus. The Edge SFVO orchestrates the FUDGE-5G platform to its infrastructure and then the FUDGE-5G SFVO orchestrates the FUDGE-5GC. Activity 4 will take place in Oslo.
