Back in 2020, the Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance started a new project on cloud native platforms studying the state of the art for the telecommunication sector as well as defining the gaps for all players in this domain, ie operators, developers, vendors and verticals. The ultimate goal was to exploit a new holistic and rich model for application service offering based on cloud native principles. The evolution of a cloud native telco platform is seen as a key innovation process to fully unlock 5G’s potential, embracing the whole ecosystem, including infrastructure and edge deployments.
Under the lead of Telecom Italia (TIM) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), InterDigital Europe were a key contributor to the document chapters on state of the art and defining gaps in the area of Service-based Architecture (ie service routing and service orchestration for the telco world), programmable infrastructures and platforms, as well as how hybrid cloud technologies.
The latest NGMN White Paper expands on how cloudification will be a key enabler for fulfilling diverse and unique service needs. The summary video of this document can be found here.
In 2021, the group focuses on experience in the cloud native telecommunication space where InterDigtial Europe, Ltd. will utilise the experiences obtained through the work in FUDGE-5G as the baseline for their contribution.
